Getting in the Spirit of Sharing
Each year, Valor’s Student Leadership Board brings in the Christmas season with a week of holiday spirit days, special treats and activities, and most importantly – donation drives for local nonprofits. This year was no different. In a year when many holiday traditions were put on hold, Valor’s beloved Spirit of Sharing week served to spread Christmas cheer throughout the student body.
To maximize the impact of donation items, student leaders Cata Colon ‘21 and Remi Daniel ‘21 connected with several nonprofit organizations that needed physical donations in order to meet the needs of the people they serve. “To me, Spirit of Sharing week is a time to encourage generosity throughout the Valor community,” Cata says. “It’s a chance to give to people in need, and it helps me think about how blessed I am.” By partnering with Christ’s Body, Denver Rescue Mission, New Genesis and RMSER, student leaders found a variety of ways to give back.
Valor students and parents responded in force, bringing in blankets, coats, canned goods, toys, hygiene items, and more throughout the week. As the space under the Christmas tree in the front lobby filled to overflowing, Valor students also celebrated by wearing Christmas sweaters, holiday-themed class colors, and festive flannels. Student Activities Vice President Catelyn Tankersley ‘21 marveled at the participation from all across the student body. She considers the 2020 Spirit of Sharing week a success, accomplishing the goal of “getting everybody in the holiday spirit…for a good cause.”
The spirit days and donation items both served to bring excitement to campus while reminding students of the true meaning of Christmas. As we celebrate the birth of Jesus – the greatest gift ever given – Spirit of Sharing week guided the Valor community to follow his example in giving sacrificially to love those around us.
