From the Lanes to the Deck

Returning to the Valor Christian pool felt surreal. The last time I was here, I swam laps in the lanes. Now, I’ll be coaching athletes from the deck. As I walk the halls packed with new students, I’m flooded by the many memories this community gave me, and I’m excited to make new ones for my team. I’ve only held this role for a few weeks, but I can already tell this is going to be a special season. The girls are amazing and so talented. I’m grateful I get to coach them, but more importantly, I’m grateful I get to pour into them and help them find their identity as women of Christ. That’s my goal for this season. I want to help my athletes grow in their sport, in their relationships, and in their faith.

One of the best parts about coaching at Valor is getting to coach the program my mom once led. First, she coached me on how to swim; now, she’s coaching me on how to coach. It’s been so awesome to have her as a support system and to lean on her wisdom on how to make sure that my girls know what really matters most. My mom always put a huge emphasis on caring for her athletes as people and not just athletes. That’s something I definitely want to emulate and impart on my girls this season.

When my athletes look back on their time with me as a coach, I hope they know how much I care about them. I want them to pursue excellence in the pool and use their talents to the best of their abilities, but I want them to feel cared for as people first and foremost. I’m in their corner, no matter what. If they walk away closer to the Lord and faster in the pool, that would be the dream. In a way, it’s like I’m continuing the legacy my mom started. I’m incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to do so.
