Bright Star Makes Mainstage at Colorado Thespian Conference

For the second time ever in school history, Valor theater students and staff have achieved the coveted Mainstage honor at the annual Colorado Thespian Conference. The cast and crew of the summer production of Bright Star earned top marks from adjudicators, beating out dozens of other high school productions. Valor’s performance of Bright Star will be shown (virtually), for over 5,000 conference participants.

Conference judges offered high praise to the cast and crew, stating, “We were impressed at the musicality, performances, and polish of the production and think that it is a fine example of what theatre programs can aspire to!”

The honor comes in the wake of an unusual theatre season, where all involved had to adapt in order to perform safely in the season of COVID. Students worked hard to learn their choreography and sing while wearing masks, and the final performance featured actors in a combination of masks and face shields.

“Actors had to learn how to tell a story and convey emotion with their faces partially-obscured, something we usually try to avoid on stage,” said Marlana Perry, Assistant Director. Director Kurt Muenstermann added, “We are truly impressed with how effectively our students adapted to such an unusual way to perform theatre. They compensated well and the audience quickly got comfortable with the shields; it just became a convention of the performance.”

Despite the circumstantial challenges, the actors were able to tell a story of unfailing hope and great joy that touched the Valor audience and now will have a platform to theatre communities across the state.
