Mexico Medical 2025

The 2025 Discovery Mexico Medical Team included 26 Valor students and 13 medical professionals and leaders—including a nurse, plastic surgeon, orthopedic surgeon, OB/GYN, pediatrician, internist, two dentists, and two dental assistants. Partnering with Missions Ministries, our team provided free medical and dental clinics in Villa Esperanza, Mexico, from March 23-29, serving over 400 patients in just five days.

During the week, students observed medical professionals performing clinical treatments and assisted with procedures such as suturing, injections, and dental cleanings. They also gained hands-on experience in triage, conducting patient assessments, and taking blood pressure and blood sugar readings. Several students had the opportunity to use an ultrasound to examine pregnant women. In addition to the medical work, we built two homes and provided basic furniture for two local families living in poverty. The students also served in a senior center, two churches, and an adult mental health facility, sharing the love of Christ throughout the week.

One of the trip’s highlights was a Field Day, co-hosted with Missions Ministries for children aged 6-12, with approximately 140 kids in attendance. In the evening, we joined a youth group event with 100 middle and high school students. Two of our students shared powerful testimonies that deeply impacted the group.

Through this experience, we witnessed numerous life-changing moments both at the worksite and in the clinic. Ultimately, our lives were transformed as well, and we are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be God’s hands and feet in this mission.

Mrs. Herscovici's Entrepreneurship class finished their unit on "Exploring Opportunities" by researching famous entrepreneurs. In small groups, students researched an entrepreneur of their choice and were made aware of how many times these entrepreneurs had to fail before their ideas became successful. In the midst of this research, we have been discussing the importance of being able to explain our learning. Essentially, “If you can't explain it to a six-year-old, you don't understand it well enough yourself.” ― Albert Einstein.

Calculus Speed Trap

If you travel 40 miles per 60 minutes, what’s your average speed per hour, or what’s your average rate of change (the change in distance over the change in time)? Are they different? Students in AP Calculus played cops and speeders last week in class. Students had the opportunity to use real radar guns and math to try and see if they could catch their classmates speeding along Fairview.

We want to regularly include comments from graduates to help give a sense of how the Humanities program prepared them for the next phase of their lives. For our first alumni check-in, we asked Ben Leikam to reflect on how his time in the Humanities program prepared him for college. Here are his thoughts...
